Georgia Attorney Robert Copeland Charged with Investment Fraud

Robert P. Copeland, a Georgia resident who is also an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia, was recently accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") of perpetrating a fraudulent investment scheme.

Investigation by the securities litigation law firm of Chapman & Associates, LLC, established that Copeland raised more than $35 million from over 140 investors.  Copeland allegedly told his victims that the funds would be profitably invested in real estate ventures.  He promised his victims that he could generate returns as high as 15-18% for their investment.  Lured with promises of above-market, safe returns, and trusting his credentials, many victims invested their savings in Copeland's scheme.

The Chapman & Associates attorney found that, in reality, only a small amount of the money was invested in real estate projects.  Copeland appears to have spent a large portion of his investors' money for personal purposes.  Among others, Copeland seems to have used his victims' investments to pay for expensive vehicles, artwork, and improvements to his house.

While the SEC has taken steps to stop Copeland from perpetrating his alleged fraud, recovery of investor funds from him is in doubt, according to John S. Chapman, a securities attorney.  "As in any Ponzi scheme, a lot of the funds from newer investors are used to make payments to earlier investors.  The Ponzi scheme usually collapses when the perpetrators cannot find new victims to invest, and by that time there isn't much money left to be repaid," said Chapman.

Chapman also indicated that third parties that assisted Copeland or failed to alert authorities or investors, or prevent him from perpetrating his fraud when they had a duty to do so, may be held liable for investor losses.  His securities litigation law firm is continuing to investigate Robert Copeland's alleged fraud, and is preparing to take action on behalf of victimized investors.  If you have lost money invested with Robert Copeland or his companies, contact us immediately by email at jchapman@jscltd.com, or phone at 866-220-3300.
